Sweet Heat Sweet Potato Fries

Sweet Heat Sweet Potato Fries

I love sweet potato fries at restaurants and I have been trying to create a homemade baked sweet potato fry for at least a year and a half. It is finally how I want it. I am so excited to make this recipe at home.

This recipe pairs perfectly with burgers, sandwiches, chicken, beef, pork or really anything. There is never a bad time to make these fries. The preparation requires a bit of work, but it is worth it in the end.

To make the fries, start by cutting your sweet potato into 1/4 inch thick fries. I did not peal the sweet potato ahead of time, but you certainly could if you prefer that. Once cut into fries, place the sweet potatoes in a bowl of cold water and let them soak for at least 45 minutes. You could even let them soak over night if you want. After soaking, remove the fries from the bowl and place on a paper towel and pat completely dry. Now it is time to add the oil and cornstarch and stir until evenly coated and the cornstarch has absorbed into the potato fries. Toss in the chili powder, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper and cinnamon. Do not add the salt at this time. Bake at 425 for 20-25 minutes. Stirring the fries with 5-10 minutes remaining. If you have multiple trays of fries I recommend rotating shelves halfway through. If the fries are not crispy, you can broil for an additional 1-2 minutes if desired to help crisp them up a bit more.

When the fries are done baking, sprinkle with salt to taste.

Drizzle with the honey cinnamon drizzle just before serving. Do not add the honey drizzle too soon or the fries will become soggy. For the best texture, serve immediately.

Honey Cinnamon Glaze

  • When fries are done soaking, remove from the water and pat completely dry with a paper towel.
  • Add avocado oil and cornstarch and mix thoroughly.
  • Add in the chili powder, smoked paprika, cayenne and cinnamon and stir to coat the potatoes. Do not add the salt at this time.

  • Add a dash of salt and serve hot.

Honey cinnamon glaze

  • For the glaze combine the honey and a dash of cinnamon in a small bowl. Drizzle over the fries just before serving.

Notes

Notes:
  • Do not drizzle the honey over the fries too soon. Do this just before eating or else the fries will get soggy.
  • Soaking the fries in necessary to get fries that have a little crisp to them
  • If your fries are not crispy after 20-25 minutes in the oven, you may need to broil for 1-2 minutes. If you do broil, be sure to keep a close eye on the fries so they do not burn.
